Stetson's Hospital Experience

I finally got the pictures downloaded from my phone, so I figured it was about time to get Stetson's surgery and hospital stay posted....like I always say, "Better late than never"!

This all started at the end of February when Stetson mentioned to me that he had a sore under his tongue, I didn't think much of it because I also had some mouth sores at the same time, as did Sadie. Then as I was taking the kids to school the next morning he was complaining about it again, so I asked him to let me take a look...when he opened his mouth and lifted his tongue for me to see I was shocked! I had never seen anything like this before!! (refer to picture #3) Although what I was seeing and being concerned about was not what Stetson was complaining about, the large bubble growing under his togue didn't bother him a bit, in fact he didn't even realize it was there. So I waited and watched it for a few days and finally decided we needed to have this thing checked by our Dr.
We went to our family doctor and when Stetson opened his mouth to show Dr. Sundwall he also was a little shocked....he was expecting something much smaller, like a blister. He thought it looked like a hematoma type cyst filled with blood, which is a little out of his field of expertise and referred us to an ENT Surgeon. We went to see Dr. Denys the following week and found out that what Stetson had under his togue is referred to as a 'ranula' (meaning frog--because it looks like a frog's neck when they puff it up). We were informed that it in fact was not full of blood, but saliva...it was caused by a plugged duct in his salivary gland. There was some concern that it could be a plunging ranula, where it starts growing into the muscle tissue or causing a disturbance for all the little nerves that are connected to the togue. So, it was necessary for Stetson to have a CAT scan done so the doctor could see where exactly this thing was growing.

This picture was taken on Friday, March 6th just before Stetson was taken back for his CAT scan. I was teasing him and said, "I wish we could just have a 'lion' look you over!" He got a little chuckle out of that, since it's one of our favorite lines from the Madagascar 2 movie.

This is following the CAT scan, he is trying to come back out of the anesthesia. They had to put him out because it is crucial that he holds perfectly still for the scan, and with kids, that is the best way for them to accomplish the task at hand.

Here is a picture of the ranula just before surgery on Thursday, March 12th. The ranula occupied most of the space under the left side of his togue.

During the last week prior to surgery it started expanding under the tongue to the other side.

After we got settled into a room Grammy brought the other kids in to check on Stetson, he was perfectly happy playing the Playstation, watching the movie of his choice, and drinking his chicken broth:)
They made him stay through the night so they could watch for possible swelling that may have blocked his airway, or infection around the incision. But all was going great and he was released from the hospital around 11:00 on Friday. The one thing he insisted on doing was stopping at the Pink Shop for a delicious cheeseburger before leaving (he had enough of the broth, juice, and jello...he wanted some real food!), but was very sad to find that chewing that yummy cheeseburger was not something his mouth was ready to do yet:(

And here is the aftermath of the surgery...if you look closely you'll see a fuzzy white line where they stitched him up after the disection was complete. Now all is well with him and we're so lucky it ended up being a minor thing with no lasting complications.

Last Saturday we were so lucky to be invited by a dear friend of mine to the last game of Cougar Basketball. The stadium was jam packed and excitement filled the air as BYU battled it out against Air Force for the Mt.West Champ Title. It was the kind of game that keeps you right on the edge of your seat, with the top score bouncing back and forth between the two teams. It ended with a final score of BYU 54--AFA 49. Rah, rah, ra-ra-rah, Rah, rah, ra-ra-rah, Rah, rah, ra-ra-rah, Goooooo Cougars!!!!

Me, Sydney & Stetson enjoying the game

The cougars in action (this picture was taken from our seats~12th row)

Justin got Matt down on the court for the last five minutes of the game, this is them walking across the court through all the confetti they blew out after the win. They sat in the team chairs while the team all took turns cutting down the net and was presented with the MWC Trophy.

After the game, Matt threw some of the confetti up above their heads,

I love the way it captured Stetson!

One other thing, with my friends connections as one of the top sponsors for Cougar Sports, we were served dinner during halftime by Stake Out. It was very yummy, and such a special treat. It was soooo much fun, for the kids and the kids at heart.....Thank You So Much, Justin!!!!!

Science Fair

Science Fair Projects have never been my forte, so it was only natural that we didn't do much about it until the night before it was due. We did choose Sydney's topic for research and she did all of her testing in a good timely manner, but when it came down to writing the report and putting all of our information on the board....there's just NO time like the "last minute"!! I was up all night basically doing it all for her, cutting, pasting, typing, assembling...BUT, I'm very happy to say WE got an excellent grade~~106%!! She scored 48/50 on her oral presentation, not bad for someone that didn't even type up her own report, not to mention having no time to practice it!! She is a "Smartie"...I take full responsibilty for the procrastination.

Her topic was on the Stroop Effect, which is a way of testing automatized behaviors. The brain has a natural ability to just do things automatically, without even thinking about it...reading for example. Try it for yourself~read the color words in the list below, pay no attention to the font color, just read the printed words.

Alot harder than you would think, isn't it?!?! She did an awesome job. We're very proud of all her accomplishments in school~~Just a little sidenote, Sydney also received (for the second time) a Certificate for Outstanding Performance on the Iowa Tests. She scored in the top ten percent 'Nationally' in Reading, Science and Total Composite. Way to go, Syd!!!

Sock Hop!!

Going waaay back, over a month ago, the kids school hosted a Hawaiian themed Sock Hop.
They were judging the dad's 'Best' Hawaiian shirt, so Matt, being the festive guy he is...
dressed in his LavaLava and best hawaiian shirt, he was one of the final competitors, but got beat out by a dad who had the coolest Hawaiian Koulats (sp?) and matching hat!!
Matt, Stetson & Sadie doing the Chicken Dance
Bock, Bock, Bock, Bock!!

The kids had a great time dancing, and chasing eachother in and out of the gym.
Matt and I mostly stood around like pretty little wallflowers!

Funny Face...

These are just a couple of fun pics I wanted to share from my last group of photos.
When I was taking pictures of Sydneys new haircut (next post) Sadie just had to have her picture taken too, I love how this shot really shows her personality and sassy attitude.
I also love how cute she looks with pigtails in her hair,
it has taken us a little over a year to get to this point!!
And here's my hunka' hunka' burnin love!!
He's too SEXY for his HAIR!!

Syd's 'SASSY' new do!!

Sydney is always bugging me to cut her hair...she likes it short and layered, and I prefer to keep it a little bit longer and less 'grown-up'. Well, I finally gave in (she is 11 now) and we gave her a new do, which of course is darling and totally fits her personality.

I love all the different ways it can be styled.....

I just had to take a pic of the way it flips out in the back, it just makes me want to play with it!

And Syd's personal favorite....pigtails!!

Sydney's Birthday!!

Okay, I'm really, really late in making this post; since Syd's Birthday was clear back on Jan. 22nd, but as I always say, better late than never!

We invited ShayLee(cousin), and her two good friends from school, Ciara and Megan to go swimming at the community pool for a fun little bithday "splash"!!

After swimming we grabbed some pizza and a movie
and went back to our house for some more fun.

Syd isn't much of a cake lover, so instead of baking a Birthday Cake for her we went for a special treat at Cold Stone Creamery with Grammy and Papa(of course I forgot the camera). Then for her little birthday party at Nana's house we had her very favorite...Cheesecake!!
I can't believe how my Angel is growing up, already 11!! She is very independent, and expects perfection in all she does. She usually doesn't give herself near enough credit for all the good, hard work she does...in this sense she is too much like her mother. I know I expect alot of her being the oldest and I'm very sorry to say I don't tell her enough how wonderful of a job she does. I am so proud of the beautiful and talented young lady she is becoming, she's so good to help her little brother and sister when needed and I love to see how Sadie idolizes her. She is such a great big sister and I can see how deeply she loves her family....well sis, I hope you always know how very deeply you are loved as well!!

PMS....

Q: How many women with PMS does it take to change a light bulb?

Woman's Answer: One! ONLY ONE!!!! And do you know WHY? Because no one else in this house knows HOW to change a light bulb! They don't even know that the bulb is BURNED OUT!! They would sit in the dark for THREE DAYS before they figured it out. And, once they figured it out, they wouldn't be able to find the light bulbs despite the fact that they've been in the SAME CABINET for the past 17 YEARS! But if they did, by some miracle of God, actually find them, 2 DAYS LATER, the chair they dragged to stand on to change the STUPID light bulb would STILL BE IN THE SAME SPOT!!!!! AND UNDERNEATH IT WOULD BE THE WRAPPER THE LIGHT BULBS CAME IN!!! BECAUSE NO ONE EVER PICKS UP OR CARRIES OUT THE GARBAGE!!!! IT'S A WONDER WE HAVEN'T ALL SUFFOCATED FROM THE PILES OF GARBAGE THAT ARE A FOOT DEEP THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE HOUSE!! IT WOULD TAKE AN ARMY TO CLEAN THIS PLACE! AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON WHO CHANGES THE TOILET PAPER ROLL !! I'm sorry. What was the question?

Matt's mom put this on her blog and I loved it so much I had to share it with all my friends too...it's so sad, but TRUE!!
